The Motown of GospelFebruary 12, 2017

When people think of Motown, their minds drift back in time to its founder Berry Gordy, along with some of the amazing artists he produced. Artists such as The Jackson Five, The Pointer Sisters, Vanity, Lionel Ritchie, Stacy Lattisaw, and many others who have rose to fame under Motown Records. But for those who miss the inspiration of the Motown sound, that sound has found its home in a much smaller capacity and different genre of music. That sound now reaches out to those who have a love for gospel music and the connection to God it brings. They can now experience a similar Motown sound through gospel music with a rising indie label based out of Baltimore, MD known as 2 Save Souls Records. The message of 2 Saves Souls Records is “to share the hope of Jesus Christ through uplifting music”. It all started with its founder, Keith Martin, who wanted to create a similar musical family here in Baltimore. Keith’s musical background all started back in his hometown of West Philadelphia where he was surrounded by some of the originators of the Philadelphia sound in the sixties and seventies. These originators worked with his mother who was a nightclub singer who performed as Opherral. She also had a hit record that rose to #3 on the charts in the 1960s.
In 2011, to honor his mother, who passed in 1997, he then created what is now 2 Save Souls Records. By forming 2 Save Souls records, his goal was to provide an outlet for other talented singers and musicians to share their music with the world. Since its start, 2 Save Souls Records has grown its roster to 25 artists in the U.S, U.K, Canada, and Africa. These artists, whose primary focus is gospel, performs in many genres such as neo-soul, hip hop, urban contemporary, jazz, R&B, southern bluegrass, and spoken word. They bring the Motown style over to the gospel arena. But not only is 2 Save Souls Records making its mark as a big time indie label, but they are also going beyond the pulpit walls to bring its legacy and ministry to restaurants, clubs, and community events. There is a major women’s conference that is currently being planned and scheduled for a date later this year that is soon to be announced. As a label that is continuing to grow, 2 Save Souls Records strives each day to provide their current artists as well as future artists the support and nurturing needed to advance in their careers both on and off the stage. Keith Martin’s desire to share the message of the gospel and impact lives is his guiding mission.
